MOGADISHU —A suicide car bomber has targeted a military training camp in southern port city of Kismayo Saturday, killing at least 14 soldiers and wounded many others, officials said.
The bomber, a former Al-Shabab defector who was integrated into local Jubbaland forces has driven the car laden with explosives into the Kismayo University where Kenyan military commanders were training local militia and Somali soldiers.
Al-Shabab has claimed the responsibility for the attack, saying it killed at least 100 soldiers in the bombing.
Al-shabab frequently targets government and African Union forces in Somalia.
Security officials said the death toll may rise as the car bomb was detonated next to soldiers who were undergoing training in the camp which previously served as a university.
