Mogadishu, Feb 9 (IANS) Unidentified gunmen Monday shot dead a Somali lawmaker in the country’s capital Mogadishu, a government official confirmed.
Somali lawmaker Abdulah Ahmed Hussein said the deceased, Abdulah Qayad Bare, was driving from his home in Hamar Jajab district when assailants drove by and shot at his car, killing him instantly, Xinhua news agency reported.
Police said the shooting took place less than a kilometre away from the parliament house where the legislator was set to attend a parliamentary session on approval of the new cabinet.
Bare becomes the sixth lawmaker to be killed in Somalia in the last one year.
Somalia-based militant group Al Shabaab later claimed responsibility for the attack.
