Ukraine’s armed forces on Thursday rubbished reports that infamous Islamist extremist Samantha Lewthwaite, known as the White Widow, was killed by a sniper near the eastern town of Debaltsevo in the Ukrainian conflict two weeks ago, reported BuzzFeed.
This after the Daily Mail reported a Russian volunteer sniper had killed Lewthwaite. The report was based on an unsourced report by Russia’s Regnum news agency. The report claimed the terrorist had joined the pro-Kiev Aidar volunteer battalion as a sniper herself after entering Ukraine from Somalia.
“We don’t have any White Widows, and nor could we,” said Aidar commander Sergiy Melnychuk. “[The Russians are] trying to drive a wedge between us and our British allies.”
“There’s more chance of confirming that Bin Laden was fighting there,” Roman Vybranovsky, a spokesman for Ukraine’s national security council, told BuzzFeed News.
“An Islamic terrorist fighting for a Ukrainian volunteer battalion while there are Chechen mercenaries on the [rebel] side is a more-than-eccentric idea,” he added.
Lewthwaite is wanted by Kenyan authorities in connection with the 21 September Nairobi Mall massacre in which over 72 people were killed. She is also wanted on charges of being in possession of explosives and conspiracy to commit a felony dating back to December 2011. Interpol has issued a ‘red notice’ for her arrest. Lewthwaite is also the former wife of a suicide bomber in the 2005 London attacks.
